Hellerwork is a unique and powerful form of integrated therapy. It is series based (eleven progressive sections), but which has applications for area specific treatment. It includes soft tissue therapy, theme based dialogue designed to reveal somatic connections, and movement re-education. It is an effective tool in combating both chronic and acute stresses and pains, and allows the individual a fresh look at his/her body and life.
The Body WorkThe physical hands on portion of Hellerwork is based on the original system of Structural Integration developed by Dr. Ida Rolf. The series work is designed to adjust the body‘s relationship to gravity, accomplished in Hellerwork by using a combination of bodywork techniques aimed at achieving release in the fascia. The fascia is familiar to most of us in the form of “knots” where layers have become adhered or “glued” to one another. As these “knots” can have far reaching effects they can drastically compromise structural integrity in the body.
The DialogueDuring the course of deep soft tissue release it is possible and not uncommon to experience mental and emotional effects as well. The dialogue aspect of Hellerwork is a communication between client and practitioner directed at awareness of self. This communication has the ability to draw awareness to our life patterns; i.e. movement, thought and emotional habits, etc. with the goal in mind of guiding to other possibilities and empowering the individual to try a new option. Many find that they are able to redefine their relationships with their bodies and their lives through this process.
The MovementGravitational alignment is not useful in static position alone, it must be able to carry forward into movement. Form follows function. If we are able to first release the held form of the soft tissues and then correct the function of the limbs through mindful movement, it is possible to retain or regain fluidity and ease of joint and tissue motion. The movement aspect of Hellerwork can not only progress the direct results of the bodywork but also maintain those results for longer periods of time.
ApplicationsAll in all Hellerwork is a useful tool in recovery from soft tissue trauma e.g. sports injury, surgery, etc. and both mental and emotional traumas, as the work is able to be carried out at a depth and/or pressure that is comfortable for the individual. Hellerwork is complimented by and complimentary to many other modalities; in particular, skeletal therapies such as chiropractic care, mental or emotional therapies such as counseling or psychological care. |
